Take this journey to discover what's new with me!
We will see all the news.

Enjoy!

SQL Server Management Studio 19.0 (Preview 2)

One of the unwritten laws of the disclosure says that when a software change its major version, something of big it has to be there!

We look at the change log, to see if so ..

This is the list of changes:

As it already happened from version 18 the installation of the Management Studio install also the last Azure Data Studio
This new preview version of the SMSS install the Azure Data Studio Version 1.36.2

Speaking of Always Encrypted technology, there is also the possibility to choose the protocol:

From this version the connection of the SMSS to the database engine will happen through the Microsoft.Data.SQLClient package.

Added the support for the Contained Always on availability group
We will find this checkbox under Always on High Availability.

I have never blogged on Data Classification but i will do in future.

Speaking about Data Classification the user interface is changed.

We have a new voice "Set Microsoft Information Protection Policy" and there are some modifications to the interface.

And now we come to the ledger .
Ledgers are a major new feature being added to SQL Server that brings it closer to the world of blockchains.

We will talk about what ledgers are shortly in a future post.

This new SSMS 19.0 bring us the support for Ledger feature in a Database ledger.
This ledger feature provides tamper-evidence capabilities in the database

Checks for open connection are improved in the Query Execution or Results. However these changes are not visible from the interface.

Unlike what is written I do not see any difference with my eyes on the interface of the Query Tuning Advisor tool:

Finally speaking about showplan

This version of the SSMS bring us a new file showplanxml.xsd.
This file is changed to reflect what is new of SQL Server 2022.

We have a showplanxml.xsd for each SQL server version..

This xsd file represents the structure of all the attributes that the execution plan makes visible.

Below is the only first difference obtained by comparing the showplamxml file of SQL 2019 and SQL 2022.

Now run the new Management Studio 19.0 and take a look!

The new yellow-green-red icon is not bad:

To conclude!

We have seen some interesting improvement ... obviously not all important equally.

I think the two aspects to highlight are:

This new SSMS 19.0 bring us the support for Ledger feature in a Database ledger.
A step for SQL server database towards the world of blockchains.

From this version the connection of the SMSS to the database engine will happen through the Microsoft.Data.SQLClient package.

I will have something to tell you about in the future...
